Regular Automotive Oil in Motorcycles

There is a lot of confusion about oil in motorcycles. Specially marketed “motorcycle oil” is a lot more expensive than oil sold for cars, but is it really safe to run car oil? Yes, just make sure it meets SG, SH, SJ, or SL service requirements. Generally, you are better off with a heavy-duty oil for motorcycles, such as 15w40, below is a list of oils known to work well in motorcycles:

A really good choice HAS always been Mobil One 15w50, but recently they changed their formula from TriSynthetic to SuperSyn, which has additional friction modifiers, which may make it no longer a good choice for bikes. This is still up in the air, with people having mixed results, but I say, why risk it, try one of the other ones above!

Now, this may seem sketchy to you, and you’re thinking, yea it may work, but will my bike die in a year? In the June 1996 Issue of Sport Rider Magazine, there was a report called, “100,000 mile Honda CBR900RR.” The owner used regular Castrol GTX car oil, 20W50 in the summer, 10W40 in the winter, changed his oil every 4000 miles, only changed the oil filter EVERY OTHER time. When this bike had 100,000 miles on it, they dyno’d it up against an identical bike with only 6,722 miles on it, and the horsepower and torque curves were virtually identical! The magazine later did a follow up, with the same CBR at 200,000 miles and going strong, so as you can see, the oil had no affect on his bike.

Exclusive Bikes

Formed in the year 1992, KTM is a globally reputed motorcycle manufacturer based in Austria. It came to India in the year 2007 in partnership with the domestic automotive manufacturer – Bajaj Auto. KTM Duke 200 was the first bike released here which became an instant hit among the teens and the audacious population.

Duke 200 and Duke 390 are the ones seen in India. KTM motorcycles are more known for their styling. The Duke series looks sporty with their sleek design and comes packed with best-in-class safety features. KTM Dukes run on alloy wheels and tubeless wide tyres. They have a big fuel tank and stylish headlamps. The rear is also uniquely designed, which has LED tail lights incorporated with turn indicators.

The KTM Duke 200 is a naked sports motorcycle powered by a 199.5 cc, single cylinder 4 stroke liquid cooling engine that can produce a peak power of 25 bhp at 10,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 19.2 NM at 8,000 rpm. The motorcycle is equipped with a six speed manual transmission for massive performance. The top speed is 136 kmph and the mileage claimed is 28 kmpl in cities and 34 kmpl on highways.

On the other hand, Duke 390 is a more powerful 373.2 cc single cylinder, liquid cooled, smooth reviving unit that produces around 43 bhp of high power at 9,500 rpm and 35 Nm of peak torque at 7500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6 speed gearbox. The tall gears simply mean less changing of gears which make it easy for city commuting. But the radiator, if overworked, becomes extremely hot and it becomes impossible to ride the bike comfortably. The top speed here is 140 kmph but the fuel efficiency is lesser. The figures point at 25 kmpl on an average.

The Duke 390 is slightly heavier than the former and enjoys a better power-to-weight ratio. Duke 390 also gets disc brakes, ABS, better tyres and a smoother suspension. Most other features are almost same in both the bikes. These bikes are specifically designed to run on rough terrain.

KTM bikes are seen only in vibrant orange colour. These bikes are quite expensive and KTM Duke 200 carries a minimum price tag of Rs 1 lakh while the Duke 390 comes at around Rs 2 lakhs. These are approximate prices exclusive of tax, registration, insurance and other related costs. Although it is thus true that such expensive super bikes have limited buyers in India, the scenario is slowly changing,thanks to overall prosperity and better standard of living. However, high maintenance cost, low spare parts availability and lack of trained repair persons are some of its other drawbacks.

Do Your Own Small Automotive Electrical

At the age of plus minus 13, I came across a small, old motorcycle and decided to revamp it all on my own. One electrical mistake made by me, nearly caused that bike to burn to the ground. As it was burning, I tried to pull the burning wires off. Those burning wires caused serious damages and burns to my hands that day.

Just a word of caution if want to buy a test light, make sure you do become one that is fitted with L.E.D’s. As a normal test light with a globe can cause damages to modern cars that are equipped with electronic systems.

For any small automotive electrical defect on your car, you must use your diagram to find all the fuse boxes in your car. All modern cars do have multiple fuse boxes.

The way to go for you as a novice after you has found all the fuse boxes. Then by using your test light and touching the fuses, the test light must illuminate on both ends of the fuses. If the test light only illuminates on the one side of the fuse this means that the fuse is blown.

Then you must make sure you replace that blown fuse with an appropriate amperage fuse. Replacing that blown fuse may solve your problem. If your actions do not solve the problem, you can decide to call on an auto electrician.

If that fuse you have replaced keeps on blowing there is a short on the car, and your problem is more serious than you thought. Never replace a blown fuse with a fuse that has a higher amperage rate than the one you have removed.

1.Start your painting project by removing everything from your frame. You will need to remember where every part came from.

2.Purchase some 80 grit sand paper; you will need two to three packages depending on the size of your bike frame.

3.Sand the frame just until the shine is gone. You don’t want to remove too much of the finish.

4.Wash the frame with soap and water. Dry the frame and wait at least an hour before the next step.

5.You will need one can of automotive paint primer, one can of gold automotive spray paint and one can of automotive spray clear coat.

6.Use the primer first and wait for it to dry. Add four to five more coats of primer, waiting the allotted time between coats.

7.Wait at least one day and then sand very lightly. Remove any dust.

The next step is the paint. Apply in the same manner as you did the primer.

8.Wait another day and apply the clear coat the same way. Be sure to allow appropriate drying time.

9.After 24 to 48 hours you can reassemble the bike.
